Testimonials

From teachers I’ve worked alongside and people at McDaniel who know my work.

In the classroom

I have worked with Spencer for two years as his practicum supervisor at McDaniel College. He is a sensitive and creative educator whose lessons go well beyond dates and events, offering students genuine insight into the lives of the people who shaped the world around them. Spencer is a watchful teacher, attentive to students who need extra support and generous in encouraging those who are already thriving. His maturity is evident throughout his practicum experience, which he clearly approaches as the first step toward a career devoted to enriching the lives of his students.

Spencer is a proactive educator who consistently steps up to support in the classroom. He played a key role in shaping our Ancient Egypt curriculum from initial planning through active teaching, developing his instructional and classroom management skills along the way. Spencer’s lively energy and commitment to connecting with students make him a promising teacher and historian.

Spencer is a diligent, enthusiastic teacher whose curiosity is infectious. He is receptive to feedback and always seeks ways to go above and beyond. In particular, he encourages classroom discussion on historical concepts by bringing background knowledge that expands the worldview of his students. I look forward to seeing how he continues to thrive in his professional endeavors.

At McDaniel

Spencer enjoys reading and is always willing to look more into what is being read. Spencer is open to different perspectives and, importantly, is willing to listen to different voices. Spencer is particularly interested in the history of Chinese workers and Chinese communities in the U.S. from the 1860s on. We worked together to design the Global Asia/s: Independent Studies course, and Spencer showed a strong interest in the topics throughout the process. Spencer took the initiative in setting up the course, choosing readings and thoughtfully completed all of the assigned work.

What has impressed me most is that Spencer does not simply want to learn historical facts. Spencer wants to understand what those histories mean and how different people have experienced and understood their past. This curiosity, openness to different perspectives, and willingness to ask questions are qualities that I believe will serve Spencer very well as a future historian.

I am confident that Spencer will continue to represent McDaniel College well in all of his future endeavors.
