The entrance to McDaniel College's Budapest campus, where Spencer Charrington studied in 2024-25

What a year living alone in Budapest taught me about teaching

In 2024-25 I lived on my own in Budapest while I studied at McDaniel’s campus there. For the first few months I couldn’t read the tram signs, and I also ended up in a walking boot for five weeks.

This piece is about what being the new person every single day showed me. A lot of it is now how I think about students who are new to a school or new to English.

Six books I read this summer

I read as much as I could between placements this summer. Six books stuck with me.

Two of them were Black Butterflies by Priscilla Morris, about an artist trying to survive the siege of Sarajevo, and Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner. Black Butterflies is the closest I’ve come to a book that shows students what a war does to a normal week.

Everything I’ve written is on my Medium page. I keep track of what I’m reading on Goodreads.
